The Organization

Liberating Systems LLC is a collaboration of social justice/anti-oppression practitioners who strive to make our society more equitable. We apply anti-oppression principles to education and organizational development.

Anti-oppression simply means working against the ways people in our society are oppressed. Ending oppression is another way of saying liberation.

Anti-Oppression Principles

  • Forms of oppression (ableism, anti-semitism, racism, sexism, etc.) in society are structural—a central part of how society operates to the detriment of people from groups who are the target of oppression (marginalized populations). Forms of oppression are normalized and integral to society.

  • A critique of normative systems empowers people from marginalized populations.

  • Consciousness about race, gender, class, religion, and other cultural markers is imperative. By masking oppression, difference-obliviousness contributes to societal inequities.

  • A critical examination of mainstream beliefs about what is “fair” is necessary to reveal how society uses race, gender, class, religion, and other cultural markers to oppress people from marginalized populations.

Compassion

Our work is driven by compassion, being touched by the suffering of others, and working to eliminate that suffering. We think of compassion as a feeling and a moral decision that motivates what we do.
